I’m still reading on the book but so far Kat and Luka have my attention. Their banter, sexual innuendo make me, the reader, want to stay up until four or five in the morning to finish it.

So, for your pleasure and to tease you into wanting to read more of this book I have excerpts along with  the book’s blurb to show you what a great read this book is for all lovers of romantic suspense.

From the Blurb:

Raw and risky, a new rural romance that explores the dark side of small towns, and the people who put everything on the line to protect them…

Kat Daily is excited to trade her Sydney airport quarantine uniform for an RSPCA inspector’s uniform and a job in the rural town of Walgarra. A fresh start in a new place, where she can make a real difference in the lives of the animals that she loves.

But Walgarra doesn’t offer a peaceful, bucolic existence. Like many small towns, the distance from urban settings — and urban law enforcement — has allowed a criminal element to set in. Kat may only be looking after animals, but that doesn’t mean she will be immune to people with sinister agendas.

The previous RSCPCA inspector was murdered, and Officer Luka Belovuk is determined to keep the new inspector from the same fate. He may have very broad shoulders, but carrying the safety of the law-abiding community just trying to live their lives has weighed him down, and one more death might be more than he can take.

Not all small towns are quaint and quiet, but they all have one thing in common: a community of people willing to protect their population with everything they have.

Excerpt 1

The young eucalyptus forest whispered ‘rural bliss’ rather than ‘murder scene’ but Kat knew better.

Will be your murder scene too, Galenka muttered.

Since Galenka, who sometimes preferred to be called Galina, was merely the vestigial remains of Kat’s childhood imaginary friend—a sad, mean half-Russian girl with snakes for eyes who relished her role as a troublemaker and prophetess of doom and who only made an appearance during times of great stress—Kat felt justified in ignoring her. Especially since Galenka spoke with an east European accent and haphazard sentence structure eerily similar to that of Kat’s late mother, whereas Kat’s English was perfect.

You can’t forget us, Galenka sneered.

Just watch meI’m going to do my new job well and forget about everything else. You included.

Not happening.

Galenka, the little bitch, had appeared as soon as Kat had crossed the state border. Any psychologist would have a field day with that. Despite working at an international airport, Kat had never left Australia, had lived her whole life in and around Sydney. So now that she’d split up with New South Wales to take a job in Victoria, it only made sense that—like a cat dumped a long way from home—she was spooked by the wrong colour of the sky, the strange-smelling air and the wrong number of trees.

How she longed for her comfortable former rut right now.

The fierce afternoon sun baked the hard plastic steering wheel, the heat transferring to her engagement ring to turn it branding hot. Handling the steering wheel gingerly, she took the turn-off indicated on her GPS before pulling over to tug her fake engagement ring from her finger and slip it in her pocket. Petra, her quarantine colleague, had suggested the fake engagement ring. ‘Unless you want every two-headed, potato-humping breeder pawing at you, toots.’

Not a fan of country life, Petra.

Serenaded by shrieking cicadas she squinted at two pock-marked road signs through the heat haze rising off the bitumen. One sign, the one with a black blob with a tail on a yellow background, warned of crossing kangaroos, the other indicated that the Walgarra RSPCA shelter was thirteen kilometres away. Some friendly local had blasted holes through both signs so that each looked like a chewed leaf.

A nice, friendly touch. The urge to turn around and drive right back home made her fingers twitch.

Minutes later she passed the Welcome to Walgarra sign, bullets centred together in one large gaping hole, a mortal wound designed to spill guts.

Like last RSPCA inspector, Galenka leered.

Shut up.

A cluster of blood red, rusting farm letterboxes flashed by.

Don’t think about the murder.

But it was a lot like telling herself not to think of a blue cow. As soon as she did, all she saw were blue cows. Bullet-ridden blue cows. And no amount of self-administered pep talks changed the fact that violence was an occupational hazard that any RSPCA inspector could expect. Galenka’s comments had nothing on the news stories that a cursory Google search produced. Inspectors who’d been choked out, stabbed, punched and spat on. It was a sad fact that the people most likely to neglect or abuse animals were also likely to react inappropriately, and sometimes violently, towards inspectors investigating a case. And sure, that violence smeared queasy doubt all over the joy of working with animals, but those animals needed her. If she didn’t help them just because she was afraid then she was just as bad as all the people who never helped her, or her mother, because they were afraid to. Because her dad was not only a mean bastard but also a cop.

So stuff the queasiness, stuff the sweat that slicked her hands whenever she thought too long about the murdered RSPCA inspector. Faith in people—and she had no such faith—was not enough to protect the weak and vulnerable. Only laws and protective authority could work that magic and she’d signed up to do her bit.

She’d seen too many terrapins stuffed down travellers’ pants, too many rare birds tucked into socks. The parrots, pangolins and pythons stuffed inside suitcases, the drugs sewed into the bellies of puppies, she was sick of it, choking on it.

And all she had to do to change things, to feel clean again, was to hang onto courage and do her job.

You can do this.

Excerpt 2

Kat, squinting against the glare, clocked a figure poised on the threshold like an intruder.

Great, more trouble.

The man wore a face made for scars. And then there was that body of his—jacked in a way that would arouse envy in the weights yard of a maximum security prison.

And the manner in which he took in the whole room, absorbed it with one look? She knew. Though there was no police uniform, no weapons, no cuffs nor utility belt to confirm it, everything about him screamed law enforcement, from the shoulders built for breaking down doors to the flatly assessing stare harder than a riot baton. She knew what he was.

A cop.

Excerpt 3

Sweat drenched the neck of his grey t-shirt black and ran down his flushed face, but the gaze he turned upon the irate, cat-dumping dad was cold enough to freeze brand a steer. ‘Back it up, mate.’

The look on his clean-shaven, don’t-fuck-with-me face had the Father of the Year retreating several steps.

A white knight, one of the good guys, yet something about him left Kat feeling rattled rather than reassured.

Excerpt 4

Injury was not a worry, she knew from statistics that yoga or cycling could break bones or sprain limbs just as easily as a self-defence class. Still. She pictured herself wrestling a two-hundred-pound correctional officer or, worse, wrestling with this man. Her eyes went to the massive forearm resting on the car door and she couldn’t help picturing it hooked around her throat as Luka stood behind her applying a loving, therapeutic rear choke hold. A shockwave lurched through her, and it wasn’t fear. No, fear would have been too healthy, too normal for her.

“Speaking of, I found a peacock feather today. I left it on my desk at the office, but the colors are amazing. I was thinking we could do something with them.”

“Feathers! I love that idea.”

“Well, I was thinking more the colors of the feather, but if you want to play, go for it.”

“Oh, I’ll play. I can totally see those Ninja Bitches running around with feathers on their backs.”

“That’s what I thought! I swear we think with the same brain.”

At that Joey grunted and Lucie smacked him on the head.

“Hey!”

“Knock it off,” Ro said. “Both of you.”

Whatever.

Leaving Ro to entertain Dad and Joey, Lucie headed upstairs for a quick shower before dinner and to call Tim. Detective O’Hottie, as Ro called him. Six feet one of muscle with the strawberry-blond hair and blue eyes inherent to Irish boys, Tim O’Brien had it going on.

And currently, he had it going on with Lucie.

Excerpt from Fatal Honor by Misty Evans

“You going to come out of the bathroom on your own, darlin’,” a lightly accented Southern voice said from the doorway, “or am I going to have to come in there and carry y’all out?”

That voice. A tiny thrill went through her, every cell in her body rejoicing at the sound of that deep, husky voice.

Charlotte remembered the first time she’d heard him speak. He’d been unconscious for days, barely clinging to life, in and out of consciousness. Exhausted from caring for him and keeping her location a secret, she’d fallen asleep next to him in bed, her head lying near his. He’d touched her face with the tips of his fingers, waking her, and said, “You must be my guardian angel.”

He’d fallen right back to sleep, but it had made her giddy that he’d woken up and spoken to her. Twenty-four hours later, he was fully awake and wanting to know what had happened.

She was no guardian angel. Angel of death was more like it. It was her fault the scientist’s plane had been shot down in those mountains. Her fault he’d needed rescuing by Miles and his Navy SEAL team.

If Miles had found out she was the cause of all of that—the trouble that killed his teammates—no wonder he hadn’t knocked on her motel room door and kissed her silly when she opened it.

Tucking herself closer to the wall, she tried to see through the slit in the doorframe. Her eyes had adjusted to the darkness but she couldn’t make out his whereabouts.

She could feel him, though. Every place that he had touched, every spot he had kissed in her cabin in the mountains, was suddenly alive again. Not scarred and bruised and broken, but tingling with anticipation.

Laying her brow against the cold metal of the gun barrel, she closed her eyes for a second. She’d been waiting for this moment, looking forward to a reunion with him. Never in all those fantasies had she envisioned herself sitting on a dirty bathroom floor, wrapped in nothing but a towel with no way out.

In her version of the reunion, she’d planned on retrieving the video from her hidden safe first, putting Nicolae behind bars where he could never hurt anyone again, and then showing up on Miles’ door with a clean slate and the tiniest hope for the future.

Best laid plans…

Without warning, the door banged fully open, smacking her body and nearly knocking the gun from her hands. A shadow moved, hands grabbing her and slamming the wrist of her gun hand into the edge of the sink. She grunted, trying to hold onto the Beretta as she kicked out at the same time with her right foot.

She landed a solid hit to her attacker’s shin. He grunted and knocked her wrist against the sink once more, the impact sending a shockwave up her arm and forcing her to let go.

No stranger to pain, she suppressed the cry that exploded in her throat, kicking out again with both legs and nailing him in the knees this round. The towel covering her backside slid on the tile floor from the effort, causing her to go down on her back as he released his grip on her wrist.

Damn. Now he had her gun.

A large hand wrapped around her ankle. One jerk and she was flipped over onto her belly, the towel coming completely undone, her chin bouncing on the floor.

Ow.

The tiles chafed against her naked skin. She fought, reaching for anything that would give her purchase, anything that could be used as a weapon.

Her fingernails scratched against something hard. The tiny garbage can under the sink. It was only plastic, but it would work if…she could…reach…it…

Miles plopped down on her butt, his heavy weight pining her to the floor. She heard him eject the Beretta’s magazine, clear the chamber of the round. He reached down and knocked her outstretched hand away from the direction of the garbage can; one of his did the job of restraining both of hers above her head.

“Don’t fight me, Veronica,” he said, his lips close to her ear as he held her immobile. His breath was warm, sending a fresh wave of goose bumps over her skin. “Or should I call you Charlotte? Or my favorite, Sarah?”

Grinding her teeth, she ignored the pain in her wrist, the chafing of the tile against her breasts and hips bones, the weight of him. “Get off of me, you lughead.”

He chuckled. “That’s not what you said the last time I was on top of you.”

Even with the cold tiles under her, a hot flush wormed its way under her skin. The memory of him on top of her, of his body working its magic on her, was enough to make her stop fighting.

He’s not the enemy, she reminded herself.

If only she could breathe. “My first name is Charlotte. My friends call me Charlie.”

“Ah, but we’re not friends, are we? Fuck buddies, lovers maybe. Not friends. Friends call one another, they don’t leave in the middle of the night with no goodbye and disappear for nine months.” He still pinned her down, his nose brushing against her head as he spoke in her hear. “What are you doing here?”

He’d kept track of their time apart. Charlotte took hope in that. “Let me up and I’ll explain.”

The light drawl evaporated. “You must think I’m naive or incredibly stupid.”

“I don’t believe either. Why?”

“You slipped away me from once before, Agent Charlotte Carstons. I’m not turning you loose so easily again. Start talking.”

So he did know her true identity. She closed her eyes for a moment, breathing in his familiar Miles scent of citrus and warm male skin, wishing she could tell him the one simple truth burning in her throat. I love you.

He wouldn’t believe her after all the lies she’d told, and saying the words out loud wouldn’t change the fact she would have to lie to him again. Leave him again. For his safety and for hers.

Struggling to breathe under his weight, she shoved thoughts of confessing her love aside and opened her eyes. “Nicolae Bourean, head of the Corsicani clan in Romania. I’m on the run from him. The reason I left you was to save your life. You and I survived that brutal winter in the mountains, and it’s one of my fondest memories, but when spring came, I had to ensure no one knew you and I had been together. It was too dangerous for you. I made contact with Emit Petit, told him where to find you and I left. I had work to do on my case, information I still needed before I could close it out, and I had to go to Nico to get it. Unbeknownst to me, he’d figured out I was MI6. He took me prisoner. I escaped a few weeks ago, but he’s after me. He wants me back. Badly.”

She forced herself not to shiver at the thought of what Nico would do to her if he ever did get hold of her again. Death would be a blessing. “You, Miles Duncan, literally hold the key to my survival.”

Fatal Truth – A Review

The characters are well developed. The plot is full of twists, turns, and surprises. The book is well worth five stars in my book.
Lt. Trace Hunter, U.S. Navy SEAL, given a strange cocktail of drugs to make him and others a super soldier. This man came through the book as real with failings, strengths and deep down a caring personality.
Savanna Jeffries Bunkett an investigative news reporter. She has her own television show. In the past she has outed Lt. Hunter as a traitor and murder. Now, she has a bodyguard that seems familiar. Why would this man Coldplay seem familiar if they never met? Savanna is not the spoiled rich girl turned TV star that Trace expects. He finds her to be quite different. Again Ms. Evans created a real to life woman. While reading it I could see her parrying with Trace in his role as Coldplay. She’s three dimensional and someone that would be quite fun to sit down and talk with about her adventure.
Parker Jeffries is Savanna’s sister. She’s a government scientist involved in Trace’s experiment. She’s a mysterious figure through much of the book at the beginning, but she becomes more prominent and involved with the rest of the cast as the book moves along. Her loyalty to her sister shines through as she strives to protect her. Another well-developed character. If I say more I will give away the story. There are more details in the “About the Book” section below along with an excerpt.

The Detective by Adrienne Giordano

Today I welcome a friend of mine from my early days with the RWA’s Romantic Suspense Chapter known as Kiss of Death. I sent Adrienne a set of questions to find out how her career progressed from there. Below are her answers. Here are my questions and her answers. I hope you will hop out to your favorite store and grab a copy. Or stop by your favorite eBook retailer and grab a copy of The Detective. Now, here are the questions with Adrienne’s answers. Below her questions, I’ve posted an excerpt.

Hi Adrienne,
Several years have passed since we were in an online critique group together. You have come a long way. I’m proud to see you made the USA Today Best Seller List. I have a few questions for you.
1. How does your family react to all the great sales?
• In the beginning, they were extremely happy that the dream I’d worked so hard for had been accomplished. Now I think they’re just used to it and we’re all back to life as me being the “baby” of the family. My brother does enjoy going into the Barnes & Noble near his house and buying my books. I think he gets a kick out of it. I’m darned proud of him for not being afraid to buy romance novels!
2. What was your reaction when you walked into a store and saw your Intrigue book on the shelf?
• It really was a bit surreal. I think I had ten digital books out, but actually going into bookstores and seeing my book was amazing. For that first book, I drove all over taking pictures of each sighting. On one trip, my husband kept telling people it was my book. One lady didn’t even read romances but told me she’d buy it if I’d sign it. I signed it right there in the aisle at Meijer.
3. Were you excited?
• Beyond excited! I wanted to kill my hubby though because I had no makeup on and was in jeans and a T-shirt.
4. Was there a little bit of disbelief there too? (Like someone pinch me?)
• For me, the disbelief never goes away. Whether it’s a digital or print book, every time release day comes I’m just in awe. I’m also so thankful that I get to do the thing I love full-time.
5. Do you write a clean first draft or do you throw it all up there and go back through it?
• Oh, heck no. I call it the ugly draft. I like to just let loose on the first draft without thinking too hard about it. I’m a plotter so I generally know what direction I’m going, but I still like to let the muse take me. Sometimes I’m stunned by what comes out and a lot of times those stunners stay in the book. Most times they’re too crazy and I delete them. It really just depends. I probably have five or six drafts before I turn a book in. And then I go through it another three or four times.
6. What’s the writing schedule like for you with several books out?
• I typically have two or three projects in a different state of editing on my desk at once. I can’t draft two books at the same time. My brain doesn’t work that way. I think I write in such a deep point of view that drafting multiple books at once is difficult for me. I will typically write 2,000-3,000 words a day (give or take!) and once I hit a wall I’ll switch to editing my other projects. Right now I’m drafting a new book, proofing the next Lucie Rizzo book and doing copy edits on the next Justice Series book.
7. I know you have a son, how old is he now?
• My baby is going into high school. I’m sticking my head in the sand over it.
8. How do you juggle being a mom with his school activities and things?
• His schedule is one of the reasons I’m so thankful I’m a writer. He is active in sports and if I still worked in an office I would miss a lot of his games. I’m really in awe of the parents who work outside the home and still manage to get their kids everywhere they need to be.

9. How did you transition from Carina to Intrigue?
• I actually met my Intrigue editor at the NJRWA conference. I sat at her table at lunch and we got to talking. This is actually a great story for hopeful writers because I’d never written an Intrigue (or any category length book). I had five romantic suspense single-titles out at the time and my agent was shopping Dog Collar Crime, a light mystery. My soon-to-be Intrigue editor also acquires for Mira and told me to send her Dog Collar Crime. She wound up rejecting the book because it wasn’t a fit for Mira, but told me if I wanted to write an Intrigue she’d like to see something from me. Having never written one, I immediately downloaded several titles and decided to give it a try. I sent a proposal and wound up with a book deal. All because my editor rejected my mystery. You just never know what can happen at conferences!
10. Was it a difficult transition?
• Writing single-titles is different from category in a lot of ways. The shorter length of category was the biggest issue for me because I wasn’t used to it. This is where my love of plot structure came in handy. I was able to figure out how many words had to be in each act (based on three-act structure) and made sure I stuck to those parameters.
11. Are your Intrigue books different from your Carina books?

This is good to know for someone interested in writing for Intrigue.

• My single-titles are anywhere from 85,000 – 95,000 words. My Intrigues are 55,000-60,000. Aside from that, the biggest difference is the characters in my Intrigues don’t swear and there is no graphic violence.
12. Are there any things you want to share about The Detective?
• I had so much fun writing this book. My plotting partners and I plotted the book on one of our marathon brainstorming weekends. It took us roughly six hours to nail down the plot, but I had great fun doing it. Lexi (heroine) was originally supposed to be a realtor while Brodey (the hero) was a homicide detective. One of my plotting partners suggested we make Lexi an interior designer because there was great underlying conflict between someone who saw the world as a canvas she could make beautiful versus a grisly homicide detective who saw danger everywhere.
13. Any little tidbits such as inside secrets we should go back and find?
• Yes, but I’m not telling because it would be a total spoiler.

A quick final question about your other series. Did you complete all the Private Protectors Series? I. E. did you cover all the men working with Vic and Mike?

Thank you, Kathy! I so love that ser That’s a great series too. I’m partial to it, I guess because we met online during your writing of Man Law.ies. I can’t say it’s done. What’s great about that series is the characters continually spin off so it can be open-ended. I just don’t have an idea right now for a next book in that series and I want to make sure I give my readers something they will love. I’d actually love to write a book with Courtney (secondary character from A Just Deception) as the heroine. I feel like she needs a happy ending.
Last, I want to congratulate you on your success and wish you a New York Times bestseller as well. Thank you, Adrienne for appearing here today. I hope you’ll pop by my blog again soon.
• Thank you so much, Kathy! I’ll come back anytime. I miss our old critique group. I learned so much from the folks there and I’ll always be grateful.

Excerpt from The Detective:

Chapter One
Lexi Vanderbilt’s mother taught her two very important lessons. One, always wear coordinating lipstick, and two, recognize an opportunity when it presented itself.
Standing in the ballroom of the newly renovated Gold Coast Country Club, Lexi planned on employing those lessons.
All around her workers prepared for the throng of club members who would descend in—she checked her watch—ninety-three minutes. As the interior designer about to unveil her latest masterpiece, she would spend those ninety-three minutes tending to everything from flowers to linens to centerpieces. A waiter toting a tray of sparkling champagne glasses cruised by. She took in the not-so-perfect cut of his tux and groaned. The staff’s attire wasn’t her jurisdiction. Still, small details never escaped her. At times, like now, it was maddening.
Oh, and just wait one second. “Excuse me,” she said to a woman carrying a stack of tablecloths. “The sailboat ice sculpture belongs on the dessert table by the window. The Willis Tower goes by the champagne fountain.”
The woman hefted the pile of linens, a not-so-subtle hint that the sculptures weren’t her problem. “Does it matter?”
If it didn’t, I wouldn’t ask. Lexi sighed. “It matters. Unless you’d like to tell your boss, who specifically requested the placement of the sculptures, that it doesn’t.”
For added effect, Lexi grinned and the woman rolled her eyes. “I’ll get the busboys to move it.”
“Thank you.”
One minicrisis averted. And maybe she could have let that one slide given that the club’s manager had to be 110 years old and most likely wouldn’t remember which sculpture went where, but why take a chance on something easily fixed?
Besides, tonight everything had to be perfect.
Functions attended by the richest of the rich were a breeding ground for opportunities. Opportunities Lexi craved for her fledgling design company. At twenty-nine, she’d already been profiled by the Banner-Herald and all the major broadcast stations in the city. She was quickly gaining ground on becoming Chicago’s “it” designer, and that meant dethroning Jerome Laddis, the current “it” designer. He may have had more experience, but Lexi had youth, energy and fresh ideas on her side. A few more insanely wealthy clients touting Lexi’s work and look out, Jerome.
Then she’d hire an assistant, rehab her disaster of a garage into an office and get some sleep.
Lots of it.
Right now, as she glanced around, took in the exquisite silk drapes, the hundred-thousand-dollar chandelier and hand-scraped floor she’d had flown in from Brazil, no questions on the tiny details would haunt her. She’d make sure of it. Even if stress-induced hospitalization loomed in her near future.
The upshot? She’d lost five pounds in the past two weeks. Always a silver lining.
“Alexis?”
Lexi turned, her long gown swishing against the floor and snagging on her shoe. She smiled at Pamela Hennings while casually adjusting her dress. Darned floor-length gowns. “Mrs. Hennings, how nice to see you.”
Mrs. Hennings air-kissed and stepped back. On her petite frame she wore a fitted gown in her signature sky blue that matched her eyes. The gown draped softly at the neckline, displaying minimal cleavage. As usual, a perfect choice.
“I love what you’ve done in here,” Mrs. Hennings said. “Amazing job.”
Being a club board member, she had no doubt shown up early to make sure the unveiling of the new room would be nothing short of remarkable. “Thank you. I enjoyed it. Just a few last-minute details and we’ll be ready.”
“Everything is lovely. Even the damned ice sculptures Raymond couldn’t live without. Waste of money if you ask me, but some battles aren’t worth fighting.”
So true.
A loud bang from the corner of the room assaulted Lexi’s ears. Please let that be silverware. She shifted her gaze left and spotted the waiter who’d passed her earlier scooping utensils onto a tray. Thank you.
Mrs. Hennings touched Lexi’s arm. “By the bye, I think I have Gerald convinced his study needs an update. All that dark wood is depressing.”
Now, that would be a thrill. If Lexi landed the job and nailed it, the top 10 percent of Chicago’s executives would know it. And competition ran hot with this social set. Before long, they’d be lined up outside her office for a crack at outdoing Pamela and Gerald Hennings.
“I think,” Lexi said, “for him we could leave touches of the dark woods. Macassar ebony would be fabulous on the floor.”
“Ooh, yes. Do you have time this week? Maybe you could come by and work up some sketches?”
“Of course.” Lexi whipped her phone from her purse and scrolled to her calendar. “How about early next week? Tomorrow I’m starting a new project that might eat up the rest of my week.”
“I’ll make sure I’m available. What’s this new project? Can you share?”
Rich folks. Always wanting the inside scoop. “Actually, it’s quite fascinating. Remember the murdered broker?”
“The one from Cartright? How could I not? The entire neighborhood went into a panic.”
The residents of Cartright, the North Side’s closest thing to a gated community without the gates, employed private security to help patrol the six city blocks that made up their self-titled haven. That extra money spent on security kept the crime rate nearly nonexistent in those six city blocks.
Except for the offing of one crooked stockbroker.
“That’s the one,” Lexi said. “I’ve been hired to stage the house. The real estate agent suggested it to the broker’s widow and she hired me.”
“I heard they couldn’t sell. The market is destroying her. That poor woman. He left her with a mountain of trouble. He paid top dollar and if she lowers the price again, she won’t make enough to clear his debts. Add to that any retribution owed to the clients he borrowed funds from without their knowledge.”
As expected, Pamela Hennings was up to speed on the latest gossip. Gossip that Lexi would not share. Being told this information about a client was one thing. Sharing it? Not happening. “I’m looking forward to the project. It’s an incredible house.”
Being an interior designer didn’t always give Lexi the chance to change someone’s life. Her work allowed people to see the beauty in color and texture and shape and made their homes more than just a place to live, but she didn’t often get the opportunity to alter an emotionally devastating situation. Now she had the chance. Getting this house sold would free the broker’s widow from debt and give her children a comfortable life.
And Lexi wanted to see that happen.
Plus, if she got the thing sold in forty-five days, she’d make a whopping 20 percent bonus. The bonus alone would pay for an assistant and give her a life back.
Nap, here I come.
Mrs. Hennings made a tsk-tsk noise. “They never did find the murderer, did they?”
“No. Which I think is part of the problem. I may do a little of my feng shui magic in there. Clear all the negativity out. When I’m finished, that house will be beautiful and bright and homey.”
“The debt, the children and now the police can’t find the murderer. And it’s been what, two years? No woman deserves to be left with that.”
Again, Lexi remained quiet. Don’t get sucked in. But, yes, it had been two years, and from what Lexi knew, the police were no closer to finding the man’s killer. Such a tragedy. “The case has gone cold.”
Sucked in. She smacked her lips together.
“You know,” Mrs. Hennings said, “my husband’s firm recently did some work with a pro bono cold case. I wonder if the investigator who worked on that wouldn’t mind taking a look at this. I’d love to see the man’s family given some relief. And, let’s face it, it would certainly be good PR for the firm.”
It certainly would.
Investigative help wouldn’t hurt the real estate agent’s chances—or Lexi’s—of getting the house sold in forty-five days. “Do you think they’d be interested?”
“Oh, I’m sure it can be arranged.”
Gerald Hennings, a.k.a. the Dapper Defense Lawyer, pushed through the oversize ballroom doors, spotted the two women and unleashed a smile. Even in his sixties, he had charm to spare. Salt-and-pepper hair and the carved cheekbones of a man who’d once been devastatingly handsome—all combined with his intelligence—added up to someone who ruled a courtroom.
“Gerald,” Mrs. Hennings said, “perfect timing. The board meeting will be upstairs. Believe it or not, we’re the first ones here.”
The Dapper DL eyed his wife with a hint of mischief, smiling in a rueful way that probably slayed jurors. “Shocking.” Then he turned his charm loose on Lexi. “Alexis Vanderbilt, how are you?”
“I’m fine, Mr. Hennings. Thank you. And yourself?”
“I was quite well until fifteen seconds ago when my wife announced my timing was perfect. That means I’ll either be writing you a healthy check or she’s volunteered me for something. Either way, I’m sure it will be painful.”

EXCERPTs

PG rated:

“Help me roll this on until we can get him out of here.” Her voice sent a ripple through him. Nick had always ignored the attraction he had felt for her. He’d had his girl back home, and fraternization out here could get him thrown in the brig. Not to mention the brig out here was a hell hole.
Nick was leery about approaching Doc now. The Dear John letter had been a shock. He had known Leila for years. Hell, they had been friends since they were little. Her betrayal was unexpected. Nick didn’t even really know Doc. He could trust her with his life, but he wasn’t ready for another go around with his heart, no matter the attraction he felt.
Nick looked toward the fence line, rifle at the ready. Shots were firing sporadically around him. That’s when he saw it, the trail from a grenade launcher, unmistakable. Shit!

R rated:
Nick quickly took advantage, pressing his hand deeper as he raised her up, her ass on his forearm. Angelina squirmed, rubbing against him. Nick bent and sucked a nipple into his mouth, teasing it through the silk. He slid a finger in and out of her heat, lightly rubbing her clit with his thumb. Angelina moaned and tightened around his finger. Pressing her close against him, Nick increased his thrusts. Nick bit her nipple and was rewarded with a cry as Angelina clamped down, drenching his hand as she came apart in his arms.
She placed her head against his shoulder, shivers running through her while her arms and legs tightened around him. Nick pulled his hand free from her warmth and licked his fingers clean, making smacking noises as he did.
“Pig.” It was so low Nick barely heard the comment. Nick chuckled as Angelina giggled in his arms.
“Did you want another glass of champagne?” Angelina shook her head and squirmed against him. Nick squeezed her to him, enjoying the feel of her, despite the tightness in his groin. “Are you ready for dinner? Or shall we just head straight to dessert?”

BOOK TRAILER

CHARACTER BIOS

Corporal Nicholas ‘Saint’ Santiago
Saint is serving in Afghanistan when his heart is broken over a ‘Dear John’ letter. Everything seems to get worse at that point. Normally a happy go lucky kind of guy he seems to have lost his optimistic view of life. The only thing that stirs his interest is ‘Doc’ a female medic assigned to the FOB. Not wanting anymore entanglements, he ignores her. He knows that he needs to go home to find the place he belongs and bring back the man he was.

Angelina ‘Doc’ Jones
She had the hots for Santiago but everyone knew he’d been dumped. Doc didn’t want to be the rebound. She joined and became a corpsman against her parent’s wishes, knowing just that she had to serve. When the grenade changed her life, she needed reassurance and someone to love her despite her disability.

“Down you Devil Dog. I didn’t put up with your shit there and I won’t here either.”

He could hear her laughter as her phone started singing I’m Bringing Sexy Back.

Angelina looked like a disheveled angel. Nick stripped off his shirt, toed off his shoes and dropped his pants.
